If you’re struggling to nurse, like I did with my first child, someone might recommend a nursing pillow to you. If you’re skeptical, don’t be--it’s a complete lifesaver! Using a nursing pillow helped me with my breastfeeding problems (and aching back) and even inspired me to create this review of the best nursing pillows to help out other moms.
Here you’ll find five of the top nursing pillows on the market now, along with detailed descriptions and nursing pillow reviews to help you choose the best pillow for you and your baby!
The Boppy name is virtually synonymous with nursing pillows. The company released their first nursing pillow in 1989 and won multiple AMBY awards as voted by moms. Depending on your age, you may even remember it from the show Friends in the late 90s.
The Bobby is definitely sturdy, durable and well designed. The pillow works for nursing by lifting your baby to a more ergonomic position for more comfortable breastfeeding and bottle feeding. This gives your arms and back lots of relief and makes nursing simpler than ever.
The Bare Naked comes in solid white with slipcover options that you can purchase separately, giving you lots of color and design options. Even with this separate purchase, the total price is still very competitive with other leading pillows.
One final design element worth a mention is its “stretch panel” that flexes to accommodate all waste sizes. If you’re like me and gained a few extra pounds during pregnancy, this is an important feature.
The My Brest Friend pillow has become a huge hit with a unique design that adds several features. It’s got a full wrap-around design with a built-in back support and adjustable clip closure. Unlike other designs, this won’t slip or fall off as you move around.
The design also incorporates built in arm and elbow rests which will relieve shoulder and neck stress. Unlike many other pillows which have a rounded top, this top is flat, more like a padded shelf, so your baby won’t roll. Finally, they’ve even added a convenient pocket for bottles, burping cloths or even your phone.
Finally, the My Brest Friend nursing pillow comes in a huge range of colors and designs so there’s a good chance you’ll find an eye-catching design you like. I especially love the fireworks design. It’s attractive and it hides all kinds of stains!
You may not have heard of Theraline as much as some other brands like Boppy, but they’ve been huge in Europe for many years.
The Theraline pillow has a unique design that makes it useful both during pregnancy and for breastfeeding. It looks a bit like a long, cushy boomerang. It bends into any position you’d like. This means you can curve it slightly for side sleeping during pregnancy or curve it a lot to use as a nursing pillow.
Users especially like the micro bead filling which is comfortable but still firm and won’t deform with use. If you’re like me and get really hot during pregnancy, you’ll find the microbeads don’t heat up like a lot of other pillows.
The one I’ve linked to here has a really attractive purple flower design but there are plenty of other choices as well.
Overall, I really like this as a maternity pillow and as a back-up nursing pillow though I think the real nursing pillows like the Boppy or the My Brest Friend are more functional for nursing.
I’ve include the Ozark Mountain nursing pillow mostly because it’s made of a luxurious cotton chenille that has a wonderful, soft feel that you and your baby will love.
I also really like the bright pink, turquoise and mint color options. Between the feel and the colors, this pillow just makes you feel good. I mean, you’re going to be using it a lot so look and feel really matter. It’s also machine-washable, so you don’t have to worry about any stains.
It’s got a nice fit too that will accommodate even larger sized moms. I’m not a huge fan of the tapered ends though as it doesn’t give as much elbow support as some other models. Also, the price is a bit higher than some other options. That said, these are pretty small negatives and the look and feel still make this a really nice nursing pillow.
This lightweight nursing pillow is perfect for travel or on-the-go moms. It deflates and rolls up quickly, so it can easily fit in your diaper bag. It also has the ability to self-inflate, making it very convenient if you’re on the go (and don’t have the energy to blow up pillows!).
The cover of this pillow is another of its great features. One side has a velvety, warm cover the helps your baby to relax or sleep. The other side is smooth and cooler and can help keep you baby awake if needed.
The wrap-around design gives support to your back, neck, and shoulders, so you can forget about the back pain you usually get from nursing. One word of caution though; if you’re heavier, it can be a bit of a tight fit.
This Airbornbaby pillow is also reversible and very easy to wipe clean or machine wash. And on top of it all, this pillow is free of phthalates, BPA, latex, and lead, so it’s extremely safe to use with your newborn.
