The Best Nursing Pillow for Breastfeeding Moms. Our Top 5 Picks!

Anne McDermott
By Anne McDermott / September 18, 2016
best nursing pillow

If you’re struggling to nurse, like I did with my first child, someone might recommend a nursing pillow to you. If you’re skeptical, don’t be--it’s a complete lifesaver! Using a nursing pillow helped me with my breastfeeding problems (and aching back) and even inspired me to create this review of the best nursing pillows to help out other moms.

Here you’ll find five of the top nursing pillows on the market now, along with detailed descriptions and nursing pillow reviews to help you choose the best pillow for you and your baby!

1. Boppy Bare Naked Nursing Pillow

Boppy nursing pillow

The Boppy name is virtually synonymous with nursing pillows. The company released their first nursing pillow in 1989 and won multiple AMBY awards as voted by moms. Depending on your age, you may even remember it from the show Friends in the late 90s.

The Bobby is definitely sturdy, durable and well designed. The pillow works for nursing by lifting your baby to a more ergonomic position for more comfortable breastfeeding and bottle feeding. This gives your arms and back lots of relief and makes nursing simpler than ever.

The Bare Naked comes in solid white with slipcover options that you can purchase separately, giving you lots of color and design options. Even with this separate purchase, the total price is still very competitive with other leading pillows.

One final design element worth a mention is its “stretch panel” that flexes to accommodate all waste sizes. If you’re like me and gained a few extra pounds during pregnancy, this is an important feature.

2. My Brest Friend Deluxe Nursing Pillow

My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

The My Brest Friend pillow has become a huge hit with a unique design that adds several features. It’s got a full wrap-around design with a built-in back support and adjustable clip closure. Unlike other designs, this won’t slip or fall off as you move around.

The design also incorporates built in arm and elbow rests which will relieve shoulder and neck stress. Unlike many other pillows which have a rounded top, this top is flat, more like a padded shelf, so your baby won’t roll. Finally, they’ve even added a convenient pocket for bottles, burping cloths or even your phone.

Finally, the My Brest Friend nursing pillow comes in a huge range of colors and designs so there’s a good chance you’ll find an eye-catching design you like. I especially love the fireworks design. It’s attractive and it hides all kinds of stains!

3. Theraline Maternity and Nursing Pillow

Theraline Maternity Pillow

You may not have heard of Theraline as much as some other brands like Boppy, but they’ve been huge in Europe for many years.

The Theraline pillow has a unique design that makes it useful both during pregnancy and for breastfeeding. It looks a bit like a long, cushy boomerang. It bends into any position you’d like. This means you can curve it slightly for side sleeping during pregnancy or curve it a lot to use as a nursing pillow.

Users especially like the micro bead filling which is comfortable but still firm and won’t deform with use. If you’re like me and get really hot during pregnancy, you’ll find the microbeads don’t heat up like a lot of other pillows.

The one I’ve linked to here has a really attractive purple flower design but there are plenty of other choices as well.

Overall, I really like this as a maternity pillow and as a back-up nursing pillow though I think the real nursing pillows like the Boppy or the My Brest Friend are more functional for nursing.

4. Ozark Mountain Nursing Pillow

ozark nursing pillow

I’ve include the Ozark Mountain nursing pillow mostly because it’s made of a luxurious cotton chenille that has a wonderful, soft feel that you and your baby will love.

I also really like the bright pink, turquoise and mint color options. Between the feel and the colors, this pillow just makes you feel good. I mean, you’re going to be using it a lot so look and feel really matter. It’s also machine-washable, so you don’t have to worry about any stains.

It’s got a nice fit too that will accommodate even larger sized moms. I’m not a huge fan of the tapered ends though as it doesn’t give as much elbow support as some other models. Also, the price is a bit higher than some other options. That said, these are pretty small negatives and the look and feel still make this a really nice nursing pillow.

5. Airbornbaby Nursing Pillow

Airbornbaby Nursing Pillow

This lightweight nursing pillow is perfect for travel or on-the-go moms. It deflates and rolls up quickly, so it can easily fit in your diaper bag. It also has the ability to self-inflate, making it very convenient if you’re on the go (and don’t have the energy to blow up pillows!).

The cover of this pillow is another of its great features. One side has a velvety, warm cover the helps your baby to relax or sleep. The other side is smooth and cooler and can help keep you baby awake if needed.

The wrap-around design gives support to your back, neck, and shoulders, so you can forget about the back pain you usually get from nursing. One word of caution though; if you’re heavier, it can be a bit of a tight fit.

This Airbornbaby pillow is also reversible and very easy to wipe clean or machine wash. And on top of it all, this pillow is free of phthalates, BPA, latex, and lead, so it’s extremely safe to use with your newborn.

Still Not Sure? A Quick Recap

If our nursing pillow reviews still have you stuck as to which product is the best nursing pillow for you, here are a few tips to help you choose.

The Best Nursing Bras For Breastfeeding Moms. Our Ultimate Guide

Anne McDermott
By Anne McDermott / September 11, 2016
Best nursing bras featured

Are you on the lookout for the best nursing bra or best maternity bra? Have you been reading nursing bra reviews nonstop to no avail? Well, you’re in the right place.

The perfect nursing bra can be hard to find. Not only is it difficult to find a bra that adjusts to your fluctuating size, but some bras have complicated clips and clasps that make it nearly impossible to nurse. And that’s just the beginning of the problems that many nursing moms run into!

That’s why we decided to put together this article--to help out all of the breastfeeding moms struggling to find a great bra.

Here, we’ll discuss not only different types of nursing bras, but the top brands so that you’re more informed about the companies you’re buying from. In addition, we’ll show you our ten favorite bras with detailed descriptions and reviews. Finally, we’ve written a buying guide for you so you know exactly what to look for in a nursing bra.

Types of Nursing Bras

Although it may seem like there is only one type of nursing bra, there are actually several, made from different materials and for different uses. Below you can read all about the main types of nursing bras.

Soft-Cup Nursing Bras

Soft-cup nursing bras, or the classic nursing bra, normally have cups that lower from a hook closure near the shoulder strap. They generally have wider straps, soft cotton lining, and extra hooks and eyes on the band that allow you to adjust the bra as your size changes. They are designed to hold nursing pads, or pads that absorb leaking milk, as well.

A good soft-cup nursing bra is extremely flexible and is designed with fuller cups and comfortable fabrics. This type of nursing bra is meant to provide the mother with easy access to her breasts so that she can nurse discreetly and with minimal effort in public or in the comfort of her own home. This type of nursing bra can be worn under a variety of garments, but most mothers choose to wear maternity or nursing tops to make breastfeeding easier.

Sleep Nursing Bras

Sleep nursing bras are formulated to be comfortable to wear while also having the functionality of the classic nursing bra. They’re made of a mix of soft cotton and spandex, so they can stretch to fit you comfortably without any pinching or squeezing. Their goal is to let you rest comfortably while also offering an easy-to-use system for breastfeeding.

This type of bra usually doesn’t have any clasps to deal with, making it simple to use in the middle of the night--just pull down one of the cups to nurse. Although sleep nursing bras do offer the ultimate comfort and convenience, they don’t have the support a regular day-to-day nursing bra does.

Tank Top Nursing Bras

This type of bra combines a nursing bra and nursing top to create a two-in-one garment that is perfect for layering under other shirts. Most tank top nursing bras offer ultimate comfort and support with an inner molded bra and under-bust seaming. These are the best type of bras to wear whether you’re around the house or out running errands.

These types of bras can be used for nursing in public, lounging, or even sleepwear. They tend to be long in length to provide full stomach coverage, and they can be worn as a maternity shirt as well.

Sports Nursing Bras

This type of bra allows women who have recently had a child to stay fit while also being able to nurse. Sports nursing bras normally have a drop cup front panel with one-handed clasps to make breastfeeding simple. This type of bra usually focuses on comfort and breathability while also ensuring support, so that you can go on a jog with no worries!

Nursing Bra Brands

The company owns multiple patents and aims to produce bras that are just as comfortable, supportive, and fashionable as non-nursing bras.

Don’t let the playful name fool you--Bamboobies is serious about its nursing bras! In fact, it produces some of the most popular nursing bras currently available. The company began when one mother couldn’t find a suitable nursing pad for herself. After making her own out of bamboo velour fabric, Bamboobies was born!

After creating original and overnight nursing pads, the founder began to address other pregnancy and new mother challenges. Now the company has a full product line and team, gained distribution partners in the United States and abroad, and has a growing base of mothers who love its products.

Bamboobies now sells a range of nursing pads, nursing bras, shawls, and tanks, and a variety of breastfeeding care products. As the company continues to grow, they also continue to stand by their original mission: to ensure that new babies and mothers are happier and healthier.

Nursing Bra Buying Guide

Not sure how to figure out which bra is the perfect fit for you? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

● Sizing - You’ll want to make sure that the bra will be able to accommodate your fluctuating breast size as you go through maternity and breastfeeding. Additionally, you’ll want to ensure that your measurements match the size you’ve selected, especially if you’re shopping online.

● Functionality - Are you looking for an easy pull-down bra, or do you prefer one-handed clips? Either way, make sure that the bra is functional and allows you to nurse easily. You’ll also want to make sure you can put nursing pads inside the bra comfortably.

● Style - If picking out bras in your favorite color or pattern is important to you, this is something to keep in mind. Also think about whether or not you’ll be able to wear each style of bra under your everyday clothing.

● Reviews - Reading the nursing bra reviews online is a great way to figure out if the claims in the product description are accurate. Reading reviews from moms like you will definitely help you determine whether or not the bra is a good fit for you and your baby.

● Comfort - There’s no doubt that you’ll want your nursing bra to be comfortable. Take note of what type of fabric the bra is made of and whether it has thick straps or a racerback--these help distribute weight more evenly. You’ll also want to see if the fabric is breathable and if you can wear the bra for long periods of time without feeling uncomfortable. In addition to the well known nylon and cotton version, take a look at modal options.

● Convertibility - Are you looking for a bra that can go from day to night? A bra that can go from maternity to nursing? A bra that can convert from a nursing bra to a regular bra? If so, keep this in mind while looking for your ideal nursing bra.

The Best Nipple Creams for Sore Nipples. Nursing Moms Rejoice!

Anne McDermott
By Anne McDermott / August 29, 2016
nursing baby featured

Are you a nursing mom? Then you know one of the most common struggles that comes along with breastfeeding: sore, chafed nipples. They’re definitely not one of the high points of nursing! But don’t worry--I’ve tracked down the five best nipple creams to treat nipple pain and irritation. You can also read my guide to preventing and treating nipple pain.

What makes these products so great? First of all, many of them are completely natural and organic. They use ingredients that are safe to ingest. They also have many other functions, so you can continue to find uses for them when you’re no longer breastfeeding.

Whether you’re looking for the best nipple balm for sensitive skin or a nipple cream that promises complete relief, I’ve got you covered! Check out my top  picks below.

1. Era Organics Honeybuns Mommy Balm

era organics mommy balm

Not only is this cream non-GMO, cruelty free, and safe for babies, it’s also 100% natural and completely organic. Era Organics promises soothing, moisturizing relief or your money back. This product is perfect for painful, cracked, irritated skin, a problem I know all us nursing moms have encountered at one time or another.

One of the best features of this product is its powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients to reduce pain and irritation. Some of the natural ingredients used include sunflower oil, cocoa butter, apricot oil, and chamomile extract. Many moms rave about how great the cream smelled due to these natural ingredients.

This cream also has other uses! Era Organics recommends using it for diaper rash, dry skin, minor wounds, chapped lips, cracked heels, and blisters. A few moms mentioned that they use it for many purposes and continued to find uses for it even after breastfeeding.

2. Bamboobies Boobease Natural Nipple Balm

Bamboobies Boobease nipple balm

Bamboobies is one of my favorite nursing product brands. They make great nursing pads, bras and clothing and now have now added an excellent nipple balm as well. This is another 100% organic balm that is safe for ingestion. Its all-natural formulation works to soothe, protect, and moisturize your nipples to increase comfort. It has just five simple ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, marshmallow root, and calendula flower.

Ouch! How To Treat Sore Nipples For Nursing Moms

Anne McDermott
By Anne McDermott / August 29, 2016
How to treat sore nipples

Are you a nursing mom struggling to deal with nipple irritation and soreness? Or maybe a soon-to-be mom looking for ways to prevent the seemingly inevitable nipple pain that comes along with breastfeeding? Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Breastfeeding is something that many women struggle with due to problems with nipple chafing and soreness. However, this can be treated, stopped, and even completely prevented in the first place! Below, find our best tips for how to handle sore nipples.

How To Prevent Sore Nipples

The best way to treat sore nipples is actually to prevent them! This can be done in a variety of different ways and often has to do with your baby’s latch or improper positioning.

It’s recommended to position yourself comfortably with back support, pillows under your arms and in your lap, and your feet supported. Next, position your baby so he or she is facing you and make sure that the baby latches correctly. Letting the baby self-latch is also recommended.

Another tip for preventing sore nipples is to watch for early hunger cues. If your nipples are sore, you might want to wait as long as possible before nursing, but that will only make it more painful! You should also check for tongue-tie. A baby with tongue-tie can’t lift his or her tongue and move it forward normally, and this can cause trauma to the nipple. A medical professional may be necessary if this situation arises.

It’s also important to realize that not all problems with sore nipples are caused by an improper latch and positioning. A few other reasons you could be experiencing sore or cracked nipples include thrush, a bacterial infection on the nipple, or Raynaud’s syndrome. If you suspect any of these problems, the best thing to do is contact a doctor.

How To Treat Sore Nipples

There are many ways to treat sore nipples. One easy way is to express some milk onto your nipple and let it air-dry. Another recommended treatment is to apply an ice pack to your nipples before feeding to numb them temporarily while your baby latches on.

A good idea if you’re struggling with nipple soreness is to try to air your nipples out as much as possible. Breast shells can also be used to keep your nipples from chafing against your bra or nursing pad. A warm, moist compress used after nursing may also provide some relief, as will a saltwater rinse.

One of the best ways to treat sore nipples is to use a nipple cream or balm. There are dozens of different options, and many of them are 100% natural and organic. These creams treat irritation, soreness, chafing, and other issues. They tend to be low-price and can be easily purchased on Amazon if you aren’t able to find them in a store near you.

A few other attributes to nipple creams and balms are that they contain powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients and provide soothing, moisturizing relief. Many are also completely safe to ingest, so you don’t have to wash them off before nursing. Another great aspect of nipple creams is that they can also be used for a variety of ailments, like cracked heels, chapped lips, and even diaper rash.

How To Stop Sore Nipples

Practicing the classic cradle hold while breastfeeding can often eliminate pain altogether. The classic cradle hold consists of sitting upright in a comfortable chair with pillows for support. Your baby should be positioned on his or her side with their entire body facing yours, and their nose and chin should touch your breast. This position completely eliminates pain for many nursing mothers.

Managing any engorgement or low milk supply problems you may have will also stop sore nipples. To manage these problems, you may have to contact a doctor. You should also avoid early uses of bottles and pacifiers, which can cause nipple confusion and contribute to sore nipples.

Another option is to see a lactation consultant, who can help you figure out the proper latch and identify any other problems that may be going on. With the consultant’s help, it’s likely that you’ll be able to completely stop sore nipples.

Now that you have more information on how to treat sore nipples, how to prevent sore nipples, and how to stop sore nipples, you should know exactly how to handle nipple irritation if it ever happens to you! Here are a few quick reminders from the information above:

  • The best way to treat nipple soreness is to prevent it by ensuring that your baby is latching correctly.
  • As far as treatments go, natural and organic nipple creams and balms are a great choice. Ice packs, warm compresses, and saltwater rinses are helpful as well.
  • If you’re really struggling with nipple irritation and soreness, see a lactation consultant. They will be able to help you correct any latch problems or other issues.

Breastfeeding doesn’t have to be painful! Follow our tips and you should be pain-free in no time.

Best nursing tanks

Picking out a nursing tank can often be a struggle with old-fashioned styles, tricky clasps, and boring patterns. But it doesn’t have to be that way! When nursing my first child a few years ago, I found myself settling for boring, uncomfortable nursing tops. I was constantly struggling to get myself in position to nurse and with clasps that broke, all with a hungry baby waiting!

When I had my second child, I was determined to find a nursing tank top that made me feel fashionable, but was also functional and easy to use. Much to my surprise, there are tons of great maternity and nursing tanks out there. In fact, many can now be used for both pregnancy and nursing. Some of my favorites are comfortable enough to keep around long after nursing days are done. Here are my top five best nursing tank top reviews.
